Alexander Goncharov, newly appointed as the Philip Schuyler Beebe Professor of Mathematics, focuses his research on arithmetic algebraic geometry, geometry, representation theory, and mathematical physics.

A graduate of Moscow State University, Goncharov served as a researcher at the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences for seven years before moving to the West. He was a member of the faculty at Brown University for 12 years before coming to Yale in 2010 as a professor of mathematics.

Goncharov was awarded the European Mathematical Society Prize at the First European Congress of Mathematicians in 1992. He is the author or co-author of 85 articles in professional journals, and delivered invited talks at the 12th International Congress on Electron Microscopy in Seattle (1990), at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich (1994), and at the Third European Congress of Mathematicians in Barcelona (2000).
